VSL Hosts Workshop and Open Consultation on Measurements for Smart Electricity Grids

In the week from May 13 to May 17, VSL will host the ‘Smart Electricity Grids Metrology Week’ for the European Metrology Network (EMN) for Smart Electricity Grids, the Euramet TC-EM subcommittee Power & Energy, and the EMPIR research project consortium ‘Standardisation of measurements for DC electricity grids’ (DC Grids).

The EMN for Smart Grids provides support for standardisation, testing and the research and development of national development and deployment strategies for smart grids. By promoting a reliable and robust measurement infrastructure, the EMN helps Europe achieve its sustainability and climate change goals and support the energy systems of the future.

The Technical Committee for Electricity and Magnetism (TC-EM) further develops the discussion of technical issues related to electrical metrology. The technical areas are important to support industry and researchers. The subcommittee on Power and Energy covers high-voltage and high-current transducers and instrument transformers.

The 20NRM03 DC Grids project is supported in part by the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) and co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States. It aims to develop instrumentation, algorithms, definitions and methodologies to support standardisation.

On Monday and Tuesday, the yearly general assembly of the EMN and the yearly meeting of the SC Power & Energy will take place, during which VSL is happy to welcome the associated European national metrology institutes.

On Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 16 May, an open event will take place: Measurements for smart electricity grids: Workshop and open consultation.

On Wednesday the program is organised by the EMN for Smart Electricity Grids. In the morning, ongoing and upcoming metrology projects will be presented. In the afternoon, an open consultation session will take place with two keynote speakers and a moderated discussion. The aim of this consultation is to present and discuss measurement challenges related to electricity grids. This will serve as input for new research proposals in future calls for research projects in the European Partnership on Metrology.

On Thursday, the DC Grids project consortium will host a day-long final workshop on Standardisation of Measurements for DC Electricity Grids. The project participants will present their project results and recommendations, and several external speakers will present their work on related topics.
