VSL to start new series of LNG calibrations with fresh LNG batch from 1 April 2026

As of 1 April 2026, VSL will receive a new batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its own LNG calibration and test facility at the European Centre for Flow Measurement on the Maasvlakte. From that date, LNG terminals, shipping companies, engineering firms and suppliers of measuring equipment can once again have their flow meters calibrated with traceable measurements.

In this facility, calibration is carried out using real LNG at around ‑162°C, under realistic process conditions. Whereas in many installations LNG flow meters are calibrated with water, VSL performs calibrations under the same cryogenic conditions as in actual operation. As a result, the measurement results closely match real operating conditions and uncertainties due to correction factors and model assumptions are minimised. VSL is the only organisation in the world to offer this type of traceable LNG flow calibration with real LNG.

VSL’s LNG calibrations are performed in accordance with international standards, with low measurement uncertainty (CMC) and full traceability to the national measurement standard of the Netherlands. Various types of cryogenic flow meters – such as Coriolis, ultrasonic, turbine and delta‑P meters – can be tested and calibrated in the facility over a wide flow range. The calibration results are internationally accepted and help users ensure reliable measurements for the trade, transport and storage of LNG, comply with the requirements of regulators and certification bodies, and reduce the risk of measurement errors, disputes and financial discrepancies for large LNG flows.

Organisations wishing to have their LNG flow meters calibrated in 2026 can already reserve a calibration slot. The available capacity around the new LNG batch is limited. Interested parties can contact VSL for more information on options, planning and specific requirements regarding LNG calibrations.
