World Proficiency Test Day: on 7 April, We Reflect on the Importance of Reliable Measurements
Today, VSL officially proclaims 7 April as World Proficiency Test Day: an international day to highlight the importance of proficiency testing (interlaboratory comparisons). In a world where almost every decision depends on accurate measurement data, it is essential that measurement results are reliable and comparable across the globe. Proficiency testing is a crucial link in making that possible.
In a proficiency test, multiple laboratories measure the same sample or measurement artefact under the coordination of an independent organiser. They use their own routine procedures and equipment. The results are then collected anonymously and evaluated statistically. This provides insights into how an individual laboratory performs compared to other participants and certain reference values.
Regular participation in proficiency testing makes it possible to track performance over time. It helps to spot systematic deviations or drift at an early stage and offers valuable input for improving measurement methods, calibrations and equipment. Proficiency testing is therefore a powerful tool for continuous quality improvement and managing measurement risk.
Proficiency Testing as a Foundation for Trust
The impact of reliable measurement data reaches far beyond the laboratory. Think of emission reports that determine whether permits are granted, or gas analyses that underpin the operation of our energy system. Without confidence in the underlying data, there is a real risk that the measurement results themselves come under scrutiny instead of serving as a solid basis for policy and decision-making.
“With World Proficiency Test Day, we want to emphasize that proficiency testing is not a mere formality, but is essential for confidence in measurement results, the measurement chain, and all the decisions based on them,” says Adriaan van der Veen, Chief Scientist at VSL.
