Metrology as a cornerstone for trustworthy AI: VSL at the Global AI Standards Summit

VSL participated in the 2nd Global Summit organised by the AI Standards Hub, representing VSL and the SmartGasNet consortium. The international event focused on the rapidly evolving challenges of developing standards for artificial intelligence (AI).

While AI technologies advance at high speed, standards development traditionally relies on time‑intensive, consensus‑based processes. The summit explored how standardisation can become more agile without compromising reliability. Key topics included AI assurance, risk management, and the need for continuous monitoring to support real‑world AI deployment.

A recurring theme was the essential role of metrology in making AI systems reliable and trustworthy. The frequently asked question “how do we know when an AI system is good enough?” clearly points towards measurement, testing and ongoing performance evaluation — extending beyond traditional, one‑off calibration approaches.

The interaction between AI systems and humans was also discussed, highlighting the importance of standards in safeguarding human rights and societal values. International initiatives such as the Seoul Ministerial Statement on advancing AI safety, innovation and inclusivity provide important guidance in this area.

The summit confirmed that metrology is a vital pillar in the development of trustworthy AI. A challenging and promising field in which VSL continues to contribute together with international partners.
