The importance of metrology in the environment

To keep track of developments in our environment, measurements are taken continuously throughout the Netherlands. Metrology enables us to measure air, water and soil quality as well as the effects of climate change and human activities on the environment. One obvious aspect of this is carbon dioxide emissions. But we also need measurements in order to determine policy on, for example, noise pollution or soil contamination.

Recognising, measuring and monitoring substances can be complex. Many substances occur in low concentrations and are spread over large areas. Moreover, the effects of pollutants vary depending on the environment and a variety of other factors. In addition, measurement methods and instruments may have limitations and measurement data can be subject to different interpretations. New measurement techniques and methods need to be developed in order to continue monitoring changes in the environment.
