Contact
VSL would like to discuss with you the possibilities in this discipline in more depth. Please contact Mr. Arend Herwijn, email: aherwijn@vsl.nl  (Tel. +31 15 269 1696), or Mr. Mark Dorsteen, email: mdorsteen@vsl.nl (Tel. +31 15 269 1507).

Service provision
Large volumes of oil, gas and energy are produced, transported and distributed throughout the world every day. The results and costs associated with these operations are based on measuring results. The measurements that are performed by an energy measuring system are a combination of a quantity measurement and a quality measurement of the medium (including gas composition, density and the viscosity of oil). A small difference in the measuring result can have serious financial consequences. It is important that accurate measurements are taken. Reliable measurements, low measurement uncertainty and traceability to international standards are of major importance.

Working method
The projects that are performed for the Oil & Gas industry are very diverse, with VSL often being employed as a third, and independent, party. Examples here are:
1. Contributing to the design of a measuring system.
2. Witnessing factory acceptance.
3. The (periodic) on-site validation test and certification of complete gas and oil measuring stations and energy measuring systems.
4. Providing international traceability to calibration facilities for flow meters.
5. Acting as an arbiter in the event of a dispute between two parties.
6. Remote monitoring and tele-calibration.
Other services we provide are:
7. Training in the area of uncertainty calculation, standards and the metrology of gas and liquid flow rate measurements and measurement of the gas composition.
8. Performing uncertainty studies and other studies that can be diverse in nature.
9. Implementation of a quality system.
Of course, equipment calibration against the primary VSL standards is an important starting point when realising a low measurement uncertainty in the practical situation.

Customers
VSL performs assignments in the Oil & Gas sector throughout the world. Important customer groups are suppliers of gas and liquid flow rate meters and gas chromatographs, gas and oil exploration companies, oil and gas transport and distribution companies, national metrology institutes, universities and knowledge institutes.

Courses
Annually, VSL produces more than 15 peer reviewed papers in the area of applied metrology, and many other publications. Much of the knowledge in these publications is included in the course material. The courses are given at VSL or on site.
